Speed limit enforced on new bridge

SASKATOON – The Circle Drive South Bridge has Saskatoon residents going out of their way to test it out the newest stretch of asphalt and some motorists have not been able to keep their speed in check.

The Saskatoon Police Service has already made its presence felt after the opening on Wednesday.

Hours after the bridge opened, police were already clocking how fast drivers were going in the 90 km/h zone, writing up 16 tickets in one hour on Thursday morning.

“It’s the newest piece of blacktop in Saskatoon so motorists are obviously excited to use it. As for what we expected, I can’t say whether that was a lot or not. I know there are certain areas of the city we would have written a lot more (tickets) in an hour,” said Kelsie Fraser, Saskatoon Police Service.

Police are concerned with any speed over the limit but are overall satisfied with the way drivers are adapting to the new roadway.

“Anytime there’s speeding it’s obviously it’s not something that we want, but the fact that we’re not having 140, 150 km/h speeds is certainly a good thing,” said Fraser.

Fraser says there are many streets around the city that require traffic enforcement and motorists should watch their speedometer and drive safe.
