The announcement was labeled “breaking news” by Britain’s 24-hour sports news channel. He’ll wear the No. 28 shirt on his hometown club’s squad.

The 21-year-old Tomlinson says “this has always been a childhood dream for me. I feel very honoured to have been asked to sign for Rovers.”

But One Directioners shouldn’t worry whether the group will perform as a quintet again. Tomlinson says he’s not leaving the band and likely will play in a reserve-team game to raise money for charity.
