Ottawa police announce 2nd-degree murder charge in fatal Chinatown stabbing

Ottawa police have charged a 44-year-old man in relation to a stabbing death in Chinatown on Wednesday evening.

The local homicide unit said police found a 42-year-old man, who had been stabbed, in the 1-100 block of Eccles Street at around 4:40 p.m. on Wednesday.

The victim, later identified as Jonathan Hammell, was pronounced dead that evening, police said.

Police said Thursday afternoon that 44-year-old Kevin Richer has been charged with second-degree murder.
