Calgary man wins $9.8 million jackpot

Ngawang Nardechen won $9.8 million.

CALGARY- $5 has turned into $9.8 million for a young Calgary man.

Ngawang Nardechen gave his father $5 to buy a lottery ticket for him earlier this month, after watching a lottery commercial.

“I always poke fun at him about the money he spends on the lottery,” Ngawang said, “I asked him, ‘How much money would you have if you hadn’t spent it on lottery?’ He agrees with me, but he has this saying, ‘You can never win if you don’t play.’”

It turns out his father is right. Nardechen’s father bought a LOTTO 6/49 Quick Pick ticket from Billy’s News along 7 Ave. S.W.—and it turned out to be a winner.

“I was the last one to find out,” Nardechen says, explaining that his mother checked the ticket for him while running errands. After scanning the winning ticket several times, she double checked it online.

“I came home and my mom was on the phone. I could sense that something is happening and asked what was going on. I slowly started sinking down onto the couch and it felt like a dream…it literally felt like it wasn’t happening.

“No one was screaming or shouting. No one knew how to react.”

Nardechen says he’s still trying to decide how to spend his $9.8 million winnings, but one thing is for sure: his parents will be getting some.

“I feel this sense of relief. My parents have worked so hard and now I can take care of them.”
