Pacifier clips pulled from shelves due to choking hazard

OTTAWA – Three products have been pulled off Canadian store shelves, including a popular brand of pacifier clip that poses a choking risk to infants, Health Canada announced Friday.

The Gagou Tagou pacifier clips, which were manufactured in China and imported by Effigi Inc. of Laval, Que., feature a stuffed toy attached to a short ribbon with the brand's name on it.

The Velcro piece that connects the clip to the pacifier can come loose. In two separate instances, the detached Velcro wound up in infants' mouths. Parents were able to remove the item before either child could choke.

More than 229,000 clips were sold across the country, Health Canada said.

Water-filled yo-yo ball toys sold in vending machines in Central and Western Canada in October have also been recalled because they pose a strangulation risk to children.

The soft-plastic balls might be filled with small, plastic insects. Approximately 900 were sold at movie theatres, retail chains and shopping malls.

No injuries have yet been reported.

The toys were made in China and distributed by GLH Vending of Kelowna, B.C.

Finally, a fabric protector that hospitalized one man in the U.S. has also been recalled from retail stores across Canada.

Approximately 67,800 11-ounce cans of Krylon Outdoor Spaces UV Fabric Protector, a product used to protect outdoor furniture, have been sold.

The American manufacturer of the product, Sherwin-Williams Co., reported that a man suffered respiratory problems after being overexposed to the protector's fumes.

No Canadians have reported illness after using the product.

The product can be returned to stores for a full refund, a Health Canada statement said.
