Edmonton – Residents of a north Edmonton apartment building were forced out of their homes Wednesday night after a section of the building’s roof collapsed.

The collapse happened Wednesday night at the Wyndham Crossing Apartment Complex, near 48 Street and 137 Avenue.

The roof was being fixed which is reportedly what caused the collapse. Fire crews say the weight of the new packages of shingles caused the roof to cave in.

No one was injured during the collapse.

Firefighters moved the shingles to make sure more of the roof wouldn’t give way.

“What we did was kind of spread out the load so it wasn’t concentrated in a single pile. There was some pretty big stacks of shingles,” explains Acting District Chief Paul Colcy, Edmonton Fire Rescue.

The majority of residents on the buildings top floor were not allowed back into their homes Wednesday night.

“We did what we could to get as many people back into the apartments as we could tonight, but we only managed 1 wing,” says Colcy. “There’s about 30 suites that we had evacuated, that have either found their own accommodations, or Red Cross has put them up for the night.”

Colcy was hopeful all the residents would be allowed back into their homes Thursday.

Fire crews were expecting the roofers to be back on site Thursday to figure out how to fix the collapse.
