Roof collapse at Red Deer hotel

Investigators believe a buildup of snow was a factor in the partial collapse of a roof on a central Alberta hotel.

Firefighters say a large portion of a flat roof over a ballroom at the Red Deer Lodge caved in late Saturday evening.

The ballroom was not being used at the time and no one was injured.

Ted Hickey, Red Deer deputy fire chief, says hotel staff reported the collapse around 10:30 p.m. after hearing strange noises coming from the ceiling.

Some hotel guests had to be moved to different rooms because of the effect the collapse had on the building’s operations.

The damage estimate is not known.
