2 people injured in shooting inside Beltline condo building

Calgary police say two people were injured in a shooting in a downtown condo building on Thursday, Oct. 8. As Sarah Offin reports, one person is in police custody. – Oct 9, 2020

Calgary police are investigating a shooting in the Beltline on Thursday night that injured two men.

The incident happened on the 15th floor of Union Square Condominiums in the 200 block of 13 Avenue Southwest just before 11 p.m.

Paramedics took a man in his 50s to hospital in life-threatening condition. On Friday, police said the victim has been upgraded to stable condition.

A second victim was also transported to hospital in stable condition.

Officers took one person into custody at the scene but police said they are still searching for a second suspect. Investigators don’t believe the outstanding suspect poses any danger to the general public.

In an update Friday night, police provided more details about what they believe happened.

They said investigators believe a man was meeting a woman for a date when he entered an apartment in the building. Once inside, they said he locked the door, pulled out a gun and began shooting.

“Another man who was in a bedroom in the apartment unit was struck and injured,” police said. “A stray bullet also went through the wall and travelled into the next apartment unit causing injury to that tenant.

“The suspect fled prior to police arrival in an unknown direction.”

Police gathered CCTV footage related to the incident and said they believe the attack was a targeted shooting. They released photos of a suspect on Friday night. (View photos of the suspect at the bottom of this article)

“Police are looking to speak with anyone who may have information about the identity of the suspect,” police said.
