Bail denied for man accused of killing Calgary woman

CALGARY- The man accused of killing a Calgary woman and dumping her body in a southeast park will remain behind bars.

38-year-old Laura Furlan was found dead in Fish Creek Park nearly four years ago. It’s believed that she was working in the sex trade, and was picked her up by a customer then killed. She was found two weeks later by a man walking his dog.

Christopher Dunlop was arrested in connection with the case three years later, originally accused of manslaughter. However, charges were later upgraded to first-degree murder and interfering with a dead body.

He has remained behind bars ever since, and on Monday was denied bail.

“There were concerns on the tertiary grounds maintaining administration and confidence in the administration of justice and protection of the public are important in cases such as these,” explains Crown prosecutor Hyatt Mograbee.

Details of the bail hearing are protected by a publication ban, but did outline the Crown’s case.

“We do have a long way to go, there has yet to be a prelim or a trial, so there is much to be done yet.”

A preliminary inquiry is expected to happen early next year, at which point Dunlop could make another bid to get out on bail.

“The issue could be reevaluated after the preliminary inquiry, so we will see how it goes at that point,” says defence lawyer Kim Ross.

Furlan’s family did not comment after Monday’s proceedings.
