Decision Calgary: Ward 7 candidates

Ward 7 includes the communities of Banff Trail, Brentwood, Bridgeland/Riverside, Cambrian Heights, Capitol Hill, Charleswood, Chinatown, Collingwood, Crescent Heights, Dalhousie, Downtown Commercial Core, Downtown East Village, Eau Claire, Highwood, Hillhurst, Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill, Mount Pleasant, Parkdale, Point McKay, Queens Park Village, Rosedale, Rosemont, St. Andrews Heights, Sunnyside and West Hillhurst.

FAST FACT: Ward 7 is one of the most diverse wards in Calgary, stretching from the Calgary Drop In Centre downtown to Dalhousie in the northwest.

Current Councillor:  Druh Farrell is seeking a fifth term in office.

THE CANDIDATES

DRUH FARRELL (incumbent) was first elected in 2001. In the 2010 election, she narrowly defeated runner-up Kevin Taylor, winning by just over 1,200 votes. Farrell has been a very visible and controversial councillor since she first took office. In a 2013 Best of Calgary survey by FFWD, she was voted both the best and worst alderman.

Farrell led the push for curbside recycling and was a strong supporter of the Peace Bridge. She also advocated for the annual closure of five kilometres of Memorial Drive for the Bow River Flow festival. She has served on the Calgary Homeless Foundation as a founding member of the Committee to End Homelessness.

Her campaign platform includes eliminating development subsidies, which would free up money for infrastructure. She also wants to improve traffic in Ward 7 by increasing transit service and encouraging alternative modes of transportation with more pedestrian infrastructure. Farrel also says action is needed in Ward 7 to minimize cut-through traffic.

BRENT ALEXANDER is a managing director with RBC Commercial Markets. This is the first time he is running as a civic candidate. He serves as an independent community member on the board of the Calgary Parking Authority, is acting president of Saint James Community Services Society and is a committee member with Calgary’s United Way.

JOYLIN NODWELL is an amateur athlete and marathon runner. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree and studied business law, accounting and human resource management.

Nodwell currently works at the Calgary Winter Club where she coaches several swim groups. She was Alberta’s top female runner at the Boston Marathon in 2010 and has run the Calgary Marathon 17 times.

Her campaign platform includes expanding the Alberta Alert System, promoting more transparency and improved communication at city hall and encouraging small business.

He has been involved in various community groups and events, including the Mother’s Day Run & Walk, the CNIB Outta Sight Golf Classic, Hounsfield Heights-Briar Hill Community Association, Inn from the Cold and the Calgary Stampede.
