Two dead following tornado in Western Manitoba

WATCH: Tornado in western Manitoba kills 2 people, injures 1 – Aug 8, 2020

Virden RCMP have confirmed two people are dead after a tornado touched down near Highway 83 and Road 50N in the RM of Pipestone, 16 kilometres south of Virden, Man., Friday evening.

Officers say they arrived on scene to find a farm had suffered extensive damage and two vehicles had been carried away and thrown into a nearby field.

RCMP searched the first vehicle, found closer to the highway, and located a 54-year-old man from the Sioux Valley Dakota First Nation who was taken to hospital with what officers say are serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers located a second vehicle, more than a kilometer away, and along with emergency services personnel, performed a ground search where they located two more individuals, an 18-year-old male and an 18-year-old female, both from Melita, who were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say they believe the two were ejected from the vehicle.

Footage captured Friday night shows a tornado touching down in Western Manitoba.

It happened near the Virden area at around 8 p.m., according to several people who were tracking it.

Environment Canada had issued a thunderstorm warning for the area earlier in the evening.

STARS was called to the area Friday evening and told Global News they were told to stand down prior to arrival and were not medically required.

Manitoba Hydro is also assessing damage in the area Saturday morning.
