HALIFAX – There is a crew change in the works for HMCS Toronto to continue its tour of duty on “Operation Artemis” in the Arabian Sea, but the troops won’t be headed there over water.

The crew from HMCS St. John’s said their last goodbyes to loved ones, on Wednesday, at Windsor Park in Halifax, before heading out to replace the crew aboard HMCS Toronto.

This deployment is a little unusual.

Normally a ship would leave with its crew, but the HMCS St. John’s and other navy ships are undergoing refits, said Lt.-Cmdr. Colin Matthews.

“They’re in need of a mid-life refit. So, a lot of our ships are currently underway in that process,” he said. “So, it’s really that it’s easier to have that hull over there which has been prepared for this mission, since we don’t have a lot of them able to go to sea at the moment.”

“This [deployment] allows us to continue the mission and execute the government’s wishes,” Matthews said.

Three groups will be deployed over the next 10 days. The first group of the 250 navy personnel went by bus to Greenwood, where they’ll fly from to the ship.
