Boat suspended from WR Bennett Bridge during prank

It was not visible if you were driving over the WR Bennett Bridge this morning, but Ogopogo made a temporary home under the permanent structure thanks to a prank.

A large Ogopogo statue was placed inside a stripped down boat which was suspended by a cable from under the elevated portion of the span.

While no one has taken responsibility for the prank, it’s widely believed to be the work of UBC Okanagan engineering students.

It’s Engineering Week at UBC-O, which often corresponds with something on the large side being suspended from the bridge over Okanagan Lake in Kelowna. It’s also a common occurrence in Vancouver during Engineering Week.

Kevin Hamakawa with Protrans, the company which maintains the Bennett Bridge, says they were able to remove the boat by hand, lowering it to the water.

Hamakawa says it was an easy task, only taking 20 minutes, as the boat was completely stripped down to its fiberglass shell.

Protrans says the boat prank happened without their knowledge and will be analyzing video surveillance to determine suspects.
