Police are investigating after a cyclist was hit by a vehicle in east Edmonton on Saturday afternoon.
According to police, a 38-year-old cyclist was travelling south on 50 Street from 82 Avenue around 12:30 p.m., when an 84-year-old man driving a Volkswagen Passat struck him from behind.
The intersection at 50 Street and 82 Avenue was closed down for several hours, as well as the southbound lanes of 50 Street while officers investigated. Shortly before 4 p.m., the routes were reopened.
Police said the cyclist suffered serious but non life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by EMS. He was released from hospital later on Saturday afternoon.
Edmonton police’s Major Collision Investigation Section is working to determine the cause of the crash.
Speed and alcohol are not being considered factors and no charges have been laid at this time, according to police.
