A carbon monoxide leak on Boxing Day has claimed the life of a third St Mary’s Villa resident in Humboldt.
A 98 year old woman has succumbed to her illness after the leak was caused by a malfunction in the building’s heating system.
After the second death the health region said it was not concerned about anyone else having side effects from the exposure.
“It is extremely difficult for us to be able to see any specific effects long term,” Shan Landry the Saskatoon health region community service VP said. “We’re learning from the experts and they’re telling us that. So we are just monitoring very vigilantly the health conditions of individuals.”
Now the health region says it is working on possible long term effects.
“We are accountable for the care and quality of care that is provided to people and we have a mandate to ensure the safety of our staff and residents and we take that very seriously," Landry added.
In total 38 people were exposed to the toxic gas.
In the next 4 weeks Carbon Monoxide detectors will be installed in all health care facilities throughout the province.
