Canwest News Service has learned that the federal justice department is looking at a new law that would allow police to randomly administer Breathalyzer tests to drivers even if they don’t suspect the driver has been drinking. Internationally random testing has proven to be an effective deterrent to drunk drivers, however critics are concerned that it would be a violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms guarantee against unreasonable search and seizure.
If adopted, the new law would replace Canada’s 40 year old legislation on drunk driving. For more information tune into the Early News at 5.00 on Global Edmonton for a full report from Kendra Slugoski.
