Craigslist car scammer arrested

Vancouver police have arrested a man accused of stealing vehicles and selling them on Craigslist.

The scam came to light in April after a victim noticed his Toyota 4Runner posted among the many listed on the classifieds website.

He notified police and they determined the truck had been registered with a false vehicle identification number.

In early June, investigators were alerted to a second stolen truck that had been advertised and sold on Craigslist. Again, police determined that this Toyota Tacoma had taken on the identity of a scrapped truck that was destroyed by a fire.
One week later, police found a third stolen car being advertised for sale on Craigslist. Police determined that the seller of the Mazda Protege used the identity of a car that had been totalled in a collision in another province earlier in the year.
Police believe there could be other victims.

Thirty-four-year-old Jonathan Duck has been charged with several counts of fraud and possession of stolen property.

He is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday.
