Canadian Pacific rail has made a partial recovery after severe floods in Alberta made the railway’s main line impassable.

CP announced on Monday that the line west of Calgary through the Banff-Canmore region is open after railway operations crews, assisted by CN Rail, successfully fixed segments of the track damaged by rainfall and snow cap melt.

The flooding in Southern Alberta communities forced thousands to evacuate their homes.

The railway was forced to detour a number of trains along its south western route while its tracks were under repair.

“The force and extent of this flooding was extensive and evolved from hour-to-hour,” said CP Chief Executive Officer E. Hunter Harrison.

“As locations were identified, CP crews responded with equipment and resources and carefully managed to safely and systematically restore each outage”.

A portion of the line is set to re-open Monday evening, fully restoring the main line. CP’s south line to Lethbridge will be restored by Thursday.
