Two men arrested in motorcycle theft ring

TORONTO – Two men are facing a string of charges following a yearlong investigation into a motorcycle theft ring that police say operated throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

York Regional Police say they’ve been investigating the ring – nicknamed “Triumph” – since last summer and have recovered 35 stolen bikes worth about $600,000.

They allege most of the bikes were stolen from underground parking lots during the winter months, adding some had their vehicle identification numbers changed and were registered to new owners.

Search warrants were executed at two storage units earlier this week and police say officers seized seven additional motorcycles worth about $60,000 along with tools for making fake plates.+

Sarath Chhean, 30, of Toronto, and Chan Ly, 28, of Bradford, face numerous charges including theft over $5,000, trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.

Police are warning people to be cautious when buying vehicles privately, especially if the seller insists on cash and the price is lower than market value.
