SANTIAGO – An earthquake struck along Argentina’s mountainous border with Chile late Wednesday afternoon, causing buildings to sway in the Chilean capital city of Santiago.
The U.S. Geological survey gave the quake a preliminary magnitude of 5.7, and put it at a depth of 99 kilometres below the earth’s surface.

The earthquake was centred about 110 kilometres north-northeast of Santiago.
The country’s emergency office said no damage was immediately reported from the quake that struck in central Chile. Chile is prone to earthquakes.

A magnitude-8.8 quake struck off the country’s coast in 2010, killing more than 500 people.
