The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the actions of police after a crash in northeast Calgary on Monday that killed one man and injured an off-duty officer.
In a news release, the Calgary Police Service said a marked police vehicle was in the area when an “interaction” occurred with the SUV.
“Details of that interaction are still being determined and will form part of the ASIRT investigation,” the release stated.
CPS said the SUV fled from police, travelling westbound into the intersection of Métis Trail and Country Hills Boulevard before colliding with a northbound pickup truck.
According to ASIRT, the SUV ran a red light.
According to police, the man driving the SUV was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on scene.
A woman in her late 20s driving the other vehicle was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition, EMS said.
On Monday afternoon, police revealed the injured woman was the driver of the pickup truck, and was an off-duty officer on her way home after a night shift.
“It is believed the officer had no knowledge of the interaction between the patrol vehicle and the truck, prior to being struck,” police said.
Both drivers were the only people in their respective vehicles.
ASIRT is a provincial watchdog that investigates incidents where serious injury or death may have been caused by police, as well as allegations of police misconduct. It’s not known how police were connected to the fatal crash.
ASIRT investigators will look into whether any police officer’s actions caused or contributed to the death of the SUV driver.
Anyone who witnessed the chase and collision is asked to contact ASIRT at 403-592-4306.
The collision caused the closure of the intersection for several hours.
