CALGARY – A repeat sex offender who was declared a dangerous offender will now be jailed indefinitely.

Cory Lawrence Bitternose was declared a dangerous offender in June of 2012, after going on a crime spree through Calgary and the violent attack of two women in Banff.

He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, minus time served – something the Crown didn’t agree with.

Crown prosecutors believed Bitternose should have instead been sentenced to an indefinite term, and appealed the original 20-year sentence.

On Tuesday, The Alberta Court of Appeal agreed to overturn the original sentence, and send Bitternose to prison indefinitely.

“The respondent has committed many very nasty and dangerous crimes against randomly-selected innocent people, and it appears to be mere happenstance that one or more of his victims has not died,” wrote Justice Jean Côté. “His record of disobeying court orders and various lesser forms of rehabilitation and punishment is constant. At present, he is a loaded gun with a hair trigger.”
