A memorial marking 55 years since the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge bridge collapsed, and 79 workers plunged 30 metres into the water, took place at the base of North Boundary Road today.
Twenty-three people were killed, 19 of them iron workers and later a Royal Commission inquiry found the collapse was due to a miscalculation by bridge engineers.
