Copperfield couple concerned after coyote killed their dog

CALGARY – A local couple is sending out a warning, after their dog was killed by a coyote in the community of Copperfield.

Jessica Fisher and Matthew Farwell were walking their puppy on Wednesday, when it broke free from its leash to chase after a bunny.

They say a coyote attacked the small dog before they could retrieve it.

The couple says there are several coyotes living in the area, and are cautioning residents to keep an eye out for the animals.

“Every other house here has a child or a dog,” says Fisher. “It’s going to happen again if there are not signs or something posted.”

Even Councillor Shane Keating agrees that as Calgary continues to expand more precautions need to be taken.

“We have to be respectful and mindful of their environment,” says Keating. “At the same time, Calgary is growing and we have to make sure that our residents are safe. It’s that fine balance between allowing a species to coexist and being safe.

The couple had only owned the small dog for six months before it was attacked.
