Taber youth leads Alzheimer’s Memory Walk

Southern Albertans take on Henderson Lake, walking to make Alzheimer's disease a distant memory.

It’s not every day you see a 12 year-old leading a group of adults..

But Macrae Setoguchi has already shown he can handle the job for the 2013 Investor’s Group Memory Walk.

Last year, Macrae single handedly raised over $4,000 for the cause, one that hits close to home.

“My grandpa last year passed away from it,”said Macrae. “And now my Grandma has it.”

Dozens met at Henderson Lake, sporting bright blue shirts to show their support for Alzheimer’s.

This year marks the event’s 15th anniversary, raising over $17,000 in the Lethbridge area.

“The money that we raise stays in the community,” said Diane Herrick, of the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada. “We run programs and services and then we give money to research as well so it helps a lot of people.”

Lead sponsor, Investor’s Group, added the cause has a wide reach.

“It’s a great cause,” said Mike Holt. “It’s very important. There’s over 40,000 Albertans affected by Alzheimer’s or some dementia related disease, so it was something we thought was really important.”

While numbers are down from 2012, organizers say the energy at this year’s event made up for it, and participants are confident awareness is growing.

“Lots of people came today and that’s good because it’s a good cause,” said Macrae.

Participants circled Henderson Lake, keeping an eye out for 15 blue signs, each with a different word on it, spelling out the phrase ‘Not every day can be good, but there can be good in every day.’

The Memory Walk was also hosted in Blairmore Saturday afternoon.

The event will be held again next Saturday in Cardston.
