Falconridge Rapist back behind bars following carjacking in B.C.

CALGARY- A man who terrorized a northeast Calgary neighbourhood for months is once again in trouble with the law.

Seven years ago, the man known as The Falconridge Rapist grabbed complete strangers and sexually assaulted them. Police eventually caught up with Andrew Aurie Jefferson, who was convicted of raping two women and attempting to assault a third.

He was sentenced to six and a half years in jail.

Jefferson was recently released, and police issued public warnings saying that he was a high-risk to reoffend. He has since been arrested in Langley, B.C., accused of assaulting a woman during a carjacking.

“This is the kind of case that causes the public to be alarmed and concerned, and question whether or not the system works properly,” says forensic psychologist Dr. Patrick Baillie.

Even the parole board was concerned about Jefferson’s release, writing:

“In all likeliehood, Jefferson will be smarter when released and will be more difficult to catch.”

However, they had to no choice but to release him, as he’d served every day of his sentence.

“When an individual is young, has offended against strangers, has used violence in those offenses, hasn’t been in any kind of stable romantic relationship, each of those variables moves them up for their level of risk for reoffence,” explains Baillie.

He says the Crown will likely have to look at declaring Jefferson a dangerous or long-term offender, which would allow authorities to keep him in custody until determining that his level of risk is manageable in the community.
