SASKATOON – City officials say flash flooding is unlikely despite the heavy rain expected over the next two day.

Flash flooding has occurred in low-lying areas in the past during severe thunderstorms.

Crews will monitor the situation and deploy crews as needed.

Officials say seepage is possible into basements. Prevention is the responsibility of homeowners and steps can be taken to reduce the risk of flooding:

  • check roofs and eavestroughs for leaks, debris or disconnected downspouts;
  • extend eavestroughs to get water away from residences;
  • make sure yards drain properly;
  • make sure sump pumps are operational

The rain has already caused a number of closures and postponements.
