New school to combat overcrowding

Hundreds of students in Quebec will be forced to switch schools next year, after changes to school zoning is finalized.

The Lester B. Pearson school board is building a brand new school to accommodate a boom in population.

Nine English elementary schools off the western tip of the island are operating significantly over capacity.

Grade 5 and 6 students at Pierre Elliott Trudeau elementary school in Vaudreuil-Dorion have been pushed out of their school, and have to attend class at a nearby junior high school.

The school board has adopted re-zoning plans that will force 500 students to change schools.

School board officials admit that the move to re-zone may not be enough to combat overcrowding in every school. They expect that four of the nine schools affected will still be operating over capacity.

Not everyone is happy about the re-zoning as it will mean more driving for some parents, and more time on school buses for some students.

While most students will have no choice but to attend their new school, exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis.
