CALGARY – Police have charged one man in connection with a security scare at the Bow Tower earlier this week.

Emergency crews rushed to Calgary’s tallest building around 4 p.m. on Tuesday, after receiving reports of a man wielding a knife and uttering threats.

Police say security guards initially found the suspicious man in a stall in the woman’s washroom on the 55th floor. The man took off, and at the same time a fire alarm was pulled.

The entire building had to be evacuated, affecting thousands of employees. Police did a search of the entire building, but did not find the suspect.

On Wednesday, police were called to the Westin Hotel in downtown Calgary, after cleaning staff came across a man in an unoccupied room.

Investigators say he is the same man wanted in connection with the Bow Tower incident, and was taken into custody.

Police and security companies are now trying to figure out exactly how the man got inside the Bow Tower.

“We do know that there’s fairly tight security at that building… so part of what we’re going to look at and certainly what they’re interested in – keenly interested in – is how did that individual get in to the 55th floor and into a woman’s washroom,” says Calgary Police spokesman Kevin Brookwell.

26-year-old Tyler Judin Berg has since been charged with two counts of mischief. He’s scheduled to appear in court on July 4.
