As of July 1st, swimmers at Grant MacEwan University pool will have to find another facility to get their feet wet.
Due to budget cuts and the implementation of a new cost savings plan, the university has decided to close the facility.
The closure will result in $500,000 in annual savings for the institution-money that can be redistributed to other areas.
Enhancements will be made to MacEwan’s current Centre for Sport and Wellness by converting the aquatics center into a larger fitness facility.
University officials say that the new expansion will increase fitness centre access for students and remove the three hour blackout period that spans from
12-1p.m. and 4-7p.m. daily.
The Grant MacEwan fitness centre expansion is expected to be complete in September of this year.
