Calgary considers smoking ban near children’s play areas

Smokers could soon be facing fines if they choose to light up near children’s play areas in Calgary.

City councillors are considering a new bylaw that would ban smoking in playgrounds, outdoor fields, and at outdoor rinks.

The proposed bylaw is the result of a report submitted to city council on Friday.

Councillor John Mar says he supports the ban, but only when youth are present.

“We want it to be flexible where adults are congregating. Certainly we understand that adults are going to do what they are going to do,” says Mar. “It’s young children that are most affected and are absolutely picking up the signals from their parents and role models.”

The proposed bylaw will be debated by a city committee on Wednesday.
