Blog: Walkin’ about at Assiniboine Park Zoo

The new Australian Walkabout exhibit at Assiniboine Park Zoo is amazing. I love it.

It’s so simple, just an open space where there’s kangaroos and emus that can’t wait to check you out. What are you holding? What’s that smell? How does the microphone taste?

I loved my morning inside the enclosure. I was really spoiled and I think if I hadn’t been there for work, the park staff would have thought I was weird for being inside for three hours. No matter, it was one of my most entertaining mornings I’ve had at work.

The kangaroos are still fairly timid at this point when it comes to contact with people. Not the emus. They were all over us. They would nibble at the light stand, the camera, my microphone. One got fresh with me, pecking at my rear, but I guess he/she wasn’t feeling it. It left pretty quickly after that.

The emus are big birds and are happy to let you pet them. They may nibble at you but it doesn’t hurt. I’ve dropped marbles on my feet that have hurt more than a nibble from an emu pecking at my laces.
