Former daycare operator gets 18 months in jail for death of 1-year-old

A former Port Coquitlam daycare operator has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for the death of a one-year-old boy in her care.

Maria McFerran was running the ‘Rattle N Roll’ daycare out of her home, and in January 2011 left baby Arto Howley unattended in a car seat in her bedroom.

She was charged with criminal negligence causing death, failing to provide the necessities of life and obstruction of justice.

During the trial it was revealed that McFerran was only supposed to have two children in her care, but she actually had five.

When baby Arto was discovered he was not breathing, and McFerran moved him to the garage and called 911, telling the dispatcher that he had choked on something.

The court heard during the trial that she had later told her husband she had lied to the paramedics and that she had failed to check on the child.
