25-year-old man dead after shooting in Toronto’s east end

Toronto police say a 25-year-old man has died after a shooting in the city’s east end Thursday evening.

Emergency crews were called to a commercial property on McNicoll Avenue near Middlefield Road, east of McCowan Road, just before 10 p.m.

“[Paramedics] arrived and they did locate a male who was in a vehicle, and he had suffered two gunshots we believe at this time,” Duty Insp. Jim Gotell told reporters Thursday night.

“The injuries were very severe and the man unfortunately passed away, so at this point in time we’re conducting an investigation to try and determine what happened.”

Police said the victim, who was later identified as Charankan Chandrakanthan, died at the scene.

As of Friday, officers didn’t release a suspect description. However, he noted there were a lot of surveillance cameras in the area.

Gotell said there were several potential witnesses in the parking lot when paramedics arrived. He said the people present left after the arrival of emergency crews, adding there may have been a party in the parking lot.
