Two officers from the RCMP’s Wadena detachment arrived on scene.
They called for help shortly after they made it there, as shots had been fired by police, the release said.
The man with the knife was hurt, and Wadena Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived to assist.
Eventually, more police arrived on the scene to help EMS with the injured man and to secure the area.
The man died at the scene. No police were injured.
The two police officers who initially responded were removed from the scene as soon as other members could relieve them.
The Moose Jaw Police Service will conduct an independent, external investigation into the incident.
The RCMP also said they have asked the Saskatchewan Ministry of Justice to appoint an independent observer who can monitor the quality of that external investigation.
The deceased man’s name will not be released, out of respect for the individual’s family, the Mounties said.
