SASKATOON – A Saskatoon city councillor says the province appears to understand the need for a provincial athletics commission that would permit boxing and mixed martial arts events.

Councillor Darren Hill says he’s talked to a couple of ministries, and he’s gotten the impression from them that they need to move forward on the issue.

It’s illegal to hold a boxing or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event without a provincial or city athletic commission, but Hill says councillors are concerned about the potential liability if the city took on the job itself.

Saskatoon council will debate whether to ask the province for a commission or set up its own body tonight.
