11-year-old driver flips SUV: kills one

A 12-year-old girl is dead following a single car accident when the driver, an 11-year-old female, lost control of their SUV and rolled just outside of Mackenzie, B.C. on May 17.

Mackenzie RCMP, fire department and ambulance service arrived on the scene and discovered the 12-year old passenger had died as a result of the injuries sustained in the crash.

Their investigation also revealed that the 11-year-old female driver was driving a 1994 Jeep YJ under the supervision of a 41-year-old adult male, when the young driver lost control and flipped.

The Causeway Forest Service Road was closed for approximately 10 hours as a result of this collision and subsequent scene examination. Everyone in the SUV were from the Mackenzie area.

“The impact on the community and in our elementary and high schools has been significant,” Sgt Syd Lecky Mackenzie RCMP Detachment Commander said.

The incident is being investigated the Mackenzie RCMP and BC Coroners Services.
