Fatal shooting at Cambridge plaza under investigation: police

Waterloo Regional Police say a 20-year-old Cambridge man was fatally shot in a shopping plaza in Cambridge on Wednesday night.

Police say investigators believe two groups of men in separate vehicles were involved in an altercation in the plaza in Hespeler at around 7:40 p.m. which led to the man being shot.

Police say when they arrived at the plaza they found the man with serious injuries. He was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

They said that the victim’s car collided with other cars in the parking lot but did not provide any other details of how it came to rest.

“The victim’s vehicle did strike two uninvolved vehicles in the parking lot at the plaza,” Const. Ashley Dietrich told Global News. “That’s what people on scene would have observed.

“Closer to the Franklin Bouvlevard entrance side you could see a collision.”

Police believe the two groups of men knew each other prior to the incident.

The two suspects were seen fleeing the parking lot in a dark-coloured car.

This is the 15th shooting in Waterloo region this year and third fatal shooting of 2019. All of the homicides occurred in Cambridge.

They will not release the victim’s name until after next of kin are notified.

Police are warning residents that there will be an increased police presence in the area while they investigate.
