National Post publisher Doug Kelly announces departure

TORONTO – The publisher of the National Post is leaving the newspaper.

Staff were told Friday that Doug Kelly would be leaving the publication at the end of May.

Postmedia spokeswoman Phyllise Gelfand said Kelly had been considering internal opportunities but announced Friday that he would be leaving the company.

The news came just over a week after parent company Postmedia Network Canada Corp. (TSX:PNC.B) announced it will no longer have publishers at its newspapers as part of a plan to centralize operations and reduce costs.

The media company has already announced the departure of three other publishers from newspapers under its command.

At the end of April, Postmedia said John Connolly, publisher of the Edmonton Journal; Guy Huntingford, publisher at the Calgary Herald; and Marty Klyne, publisher of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and Regina Leader-Post were leaving the organization.

Postmedia has been cutting costs across its operations as part of a three-year program to transform its money-losing business.

In April, the company reported a $14.2-million loss in the second quarter due to a 10 per cent drop in revenue and losses related to currency exchange values.
