Officers were called to the 600-block of Hopkins Street in the Avalon neighbourhood at around 8 p.m. on June 24 for a report of an injured man, police said.

Gerald Grimard, 60, was found dead by officers. In consultation with the major crime section, Grimard’s family members released his name to the public on July 3.

The death was determined a homicide and investigators took a 15-year-old boy into custody on the evening of June 24, police said.

Members of the major crime section have since charged the teenager with first-degree murder.

Police believe the incident was not random in nature and they were known to each other.
