Police launch homicide investigation into death of Calgary toddler

CALGARY – The death of a toddler at a local day home one year ago is now being investigated as a homicide, after the discovery of new evidence.

Mackenzy Woolfsmith died on May 2nd, 2012 after suffering critical injuries while in the care of a private day home in MacKenzie Towne. She was just 21-months-old.

Police say new medical evidence and a lack of cooperation from the day care provider has prompted them to turn the investigation over to the homicide unit.

Investigators have serious concerns following the medical findings and the suspicious circumstances around Mackenzy’s death.

On Friday afternoon, Mackenzy’s parents Dan and Jennifer Woolfsmith released a statement about the developments:

“We want the truth for Mackenzy regardless of how hard it is for us or our families. We have been in contact with the police throughout the last year and want them to have all the necessary information to reach the right conclusion.

Nothing will lessen our heartache over the loss of our little girl, but we do want closure around her death so that we can focus on remembering her and the wonderful times we had as a family, as well as raising her new little brother. We miss Mackenzy every moment of every day.”

Detectives are now  in the process of re-interviewing witnesses and neighbours.
