Closing arguments start today as the trial wraps up for the former BC Ferries officer charged in the sinking of the Queen of the North.

Navigating Officer Karl Lilgert is charged with criminal negligence causing the deaths of two passengers who were never found after the ferry sank in March of 2006.

Crown lawyers allege Lilgert neglected his duty when the ferry missed a scheduled turn and struck an island.

Lilgert maintains he did everything he could to navigate the ferry -and was shocked to see the island appear outside the ship’s windows.

He has also denied the Crown’s claim that his sexual affair with quartermaster Karen Briker played a role in the sinking.
