Saskatchewan mining sector envied across Canada

SASKATOON – There used to be a major development gap compared to other provinces but now the mining industry in Saskatchewan has become the envy of not only Canada but across the world.

Today, the third annual Saskatchewan mining forum kicked off in Saskatoon to see where the resource economy and global business stands.

After driving out investments for years, companies from around the world are once again investing in province’s mining sector.

“Today we’re playing somewhat a catch up and it’s great, we want to see those investments and we want to learn from the past and mistakes that may have driven out investment in the past and make sure that we have long term growth going into the future,” said Tim McMillan, energy and resource minister.

According to McMillan, Saskatchewan’s world class uranium deposits, rich potash resources, base metals and gold mines are paving the way for the province and the people who live above it.

“Over 30,000 jobs in our province, high paid, high skilled opportunities. The revenues that come from the resource royalties pays for the schools, hospitals, all the quality of life pieces that are so important in our province,” said McMillan.

“Too many parts of the developed world are trying to manage challenges around the lack of opportunity, we are in fact trying to say how do we capture all of the potential that’s at our disposal,” said Kent Smith-Windsor, the executive director of theGreater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce.

While things seem to be growing in the sector, McMillan hopes they’ve learned from past mistakes and don’t repeat them, as mining has become an essential part of the Saskatchewan economy.
