Toronto police say two people were arrested after a high school student was fatally stabbed during an altercation in the city’s east end Monday afternoon
Police said emergency crews were called to the Livingston Road and Guildwood Parkway area, close to Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute, before 12:20 p.m.
Toronto Paramedics took the patient to a trauma centre in critical condition. Police said the victim was pronounced dead in hospital. He was identified Tuesday as 17-year-old Brendon Bowler.
Officers originally said three people were arrested and a weapon was seized.
On Tuesday, police confirmed two people were arrested, 18-year-old Emmett Carew and 20-year-old Cheddi Itwaroo. Both were charged with second-degree murder and were scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.
In a letter sent home with students by the Toronto District School Board on Monday, the victim was identified as a Sir Wilfrid Laurier Collegiate Institute student.
“This is a sombre time for our school community as we mourn the tragic loss of this young life. I know that you will join with all of us in expressing our deepest condolences to grieving family and friends,” the letter said, adding school officials are cooperating with the police investigation.
“Although this incident took place off school property, the safety of our students remains a top priority … be assured that we will do all that we can to support students.”
The Toronto police homicide squad was called in to take over the investigation.
The teen’s death marks Toronto’s 24th homicide of the year.
