MONTREAL – Former Governor-General Michaëlle Jean was in Montreal Wednesday as part of her role as honorary witness in Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The Commission was created to document the testimony and stories of First Nations and Metis people who survived Canada’s residential school system.
Hearings begin in Montreal on Thursday at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel and continue through Saturday. The testimony of many of the 6,000 survivors of Quebec’s residential school system is expected to be heard. The Commission is free, and open to the public.
