Peace officer recruit dies at Alberta Justice training academy in Edmonton

A correctional peace officer recruit died Thursday afternoon at the Alberta Justice and Solicitor General training facility in Edmonton, sources tell Global News.

It happened at the training facility in the Terwillegar area on Hector Road.

An Alberta Justice spokesperson confirmed the fatality.

Sources say the group was doing physical workouts when the male recruit died.

Occupational Health and Safety is investigating. A stop-work order has not been issued.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) issued a statement.

“This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the member’s family, friends, and colleagues at this time,” said James Hart, AUPE vice-president and chair of the union’s OHS committee.

“AUPE is reaching out to members who witnessed the incident and will offer them any assistance they may need through out internal crisis support service.”
