It comes after Howard’s Law was unanimously passed in the legislature last week making it mandatory for all government owned buildings containing asbestos to be listed in a public registry.

There are 14 city owned buildings that contain asbestos.

Ward 2 Councillor Pat Lorje said adding those buildings to the registry is in the public interest.

“We are doing everything we can to contain it, to warn the public and to make sure all people who have access to the buildings are aware of the risks asbestos can pose,” said Lorje.

There is a possibility another 75 civic buildings may contain the cancer causing fibre.
