Northumberland OPP said they responded to 35 weather-related collisions on the 401 on Tuesday. Several involved tractor trailers in the midst of severe whiteout conditions.
Police say the incredible amount of snow and the gusty winds created whiteout conditions resulting in lengthy closures of the 401 in both eastbound and westbound lanes between Brighton and Cobourg. At one point, OPP used snowmobiles to reach stranded motorists. There were no major injuries.
OPP advised drivers to take detours during the road closures Tuesday.

The Northumberland OPP advised anyone involved in a minor collision without injuries to report to the OPP detachment at 1165 Division St. in Cobourg.
OPP say Highway 401 was closed at Mile Marker 509 in Brighton due to zero visibility from white out conditions.
All Eastbound and Westbound Lanes of Highway 401 in Northumberland County reopened around 5 pm on Tuesday.
