WINNIPEG – Aircraft manufacturer Boeing is planning a major expansion of its Winnipeg plant.
The site on Murray Park Road, just outside Richardson International Airport, employs about 1600 people in the manufacture of composite parts for Boeing’s 700-series aircraft including landing gear doors and the pylons that connect the engines to the aircraft.

On Tuesday officials announced the factory will add “more capacity” and will play an important role in making parts for Boeing’s latest product, the 737 MAX.
“The building will be expanded by 14,000 square metres (150,000 square feet) to a total of 62,000 square metres (665,000 square feet) of manufacturing space,” a news release from the company says. “It will be used mainly to construct the one-piece composite acoustic inner barrel on the newly designed engine nacelle inlet for the 737 MAX.”

A company source said the expansion will not create more jobs at the facility but will ensure it remains in full production.
Boeing has maintained a production facility in Winnipeg for 42 years.
