Mike’s Monday Outlook: Who wants a cold one?

Winnipeg, Manitoba. Rudi Dueck/submitted

We’re all tired of being cold. My workaround telling that story this week is to use a headline that brings up the idea of beer. Hopefully by the end you might want to toast to what I have to say.

It’s another week where temperatures look like they’re going to stay well below normal. No extreme cold warnings are likely on the horizon for southern Manitoba, but we won’t do a whole lot of melting either.

Sitting under low pressure typically doesn’t bring around cooler days but with northerly winds coming from the territories, it’s chilly all across the prairies with a little light snow or blowing snow around Manitoba.

As the low-pressure system moves from northern Manitoba, through Ontario and into Quebec, high pressure will settle in once again over the prairie,s keeping the sun out and the temperatures low.

There are some weather models that lean towards a bit of a warm-up starting around Thursday, like the NAM model. Generally though, most models favour the cool weather sticking around until the weekend. The weekend is the best bet to start to see a bit of a warm up.

There’s a catch though, with this warm-up would come some snow and potentially a lot of it, so the weekend forecast could be noteworthy for more than just the temperatures. That picture should be clearer later this week.

Here’s the good news. After a frigid February and a brisk beginning to March, it looks like things are going to start to level out for us in southern Manitoba for the latter half of the month. We won’t have to celebrate a day when it gets to -10 C because it looks like temperatures will be close to normal for this time of year.

That’s something I haven’t said in a long time.

Cheers.
